Emerge Gallery & Art Center is excited to announce a new schedule of classes and workshops for youth and adult learners. Classes include pottery, painting, bookmaking, sewing, and jewelry making. Workshops suitable for small children and families include Family Workshops, ArtWalk Workshops, Pop In Pop Art Workshops, and our newest Mini Makers Workshops. Come Again is a social respite program where people in early to middle stages of dementia spend time with trusted, trained volunteers in a safe, judgment-free space. We aim to bring joy, friendship, and purpose to everyone while giving care partners a chance to rest. Activities include fellowship, music, art, movement, and service projects, plus a hot lunch. Starting May 1, Come Again meets every Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2311 Elizabeth Ave. There is a small fee to attend. Come Again honors our loved ones living with dementia by lifting up their remaining strengths in a supportive, creative and purposeful way. Please join us in dedicating and celebrating this incredible sculpture–The Art of Crafting Lives–that honors the lives, work, and legacies of Black artisans in New Bern from 1770 to 1900. You can learn more by visiting our page on The Art of Crafting Lives sculpture.

The ceremony will begin with a short, outside dedication and ribbon-cutting at the sculpture in Wilson Park, located at the corner of S. Front and Craven Streets, to celebrate the completion of this project.

Immediately following, we will hold a lunch reception at the North Carolina History Center, located at 529 S. Front St., where we will hear from the project team and artists while we gather in fellowship to commemorate those whom this sculpture honors.

To ensure we have enough refreshments for everyone, your RSVP is required for attendance to the reception at Mattocks Hall in the North Carolina History Center.

Historian and writer David Cecelski is the author of several award-winning books and hundreds of articles on the history of the North Carolina coast. Dr. Cecelski’s most recent book is The Fire of Freedom: Abraham Galloway and the Slave’s Civil War, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press. On Thursday, September 24th at 12 noon, Dr. Cecelski will share stories from his lifetime of writing and teaching about North Carolina's coastal history.
He will be talking about his experiences here close to home including - Oyster Creek, Davis Ridge, Cape Lookout, Newport and Harlowe.

A graduate of Duke and Harvard, Dr. Cecelski has held distinguished professorships at Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and ECU. Among his recent honors, he has been awarded the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association’s Crittenton Award for lifetime achievement and the North Carolina Coastal Federation’s Pelican Award for lifetime achievement in “sharing our coast’s history and traditions.”

Dr. Cecelski will share stories from his lifetime of writing and teaching about North Carolina's Coastal history. Many of the areas he will cover include: Oyster Creek, Davis Ridge, Cape Lookout, Newport and Harlowe. He has been awarded the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association's Crittenton Award for Lifetime achievement.
